Background

A Career Built Around Ohio Homes

Carl Woolwine has spent his professional life inside Ohio homes — in the basements, crawl spaces, and mechanical rooms that most homeowners rarely see. That hands-on background gives him an understanding of how Ohio’s specific geology, construction styles, and seasonal conditions interact with radon that no training course can fully teach.

Buckeye State Radon is the next chapter of Air Duct Cleaning & Radon Co. — the company Carl founded in 1990. After three decades of indoor air quality and home services work across the Central Ohio market, Carl is focusing the business exclusively on radon. Through that work, he saw firsthand how often radon was overlooked — tested superficially with a charcoal kit and forgotten, or never tested at all — in homes where Ohio’s Zone 1 geology made elevated levels not just possible but likely.

CARL’S OHIO TRACK RECORD

1970–1992

Licensed HVAC contractor — designed, installed & serviced systems across Ohio.

1990

Founded Air Duct Cleaning & Radon Co., serving Central Ohio homes.

1991

Member, National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA).

2015

Earned Ohio Department of Health radon licenses — Contractor #RC362 & Measurement Specialist #RS579.

2026

Rebranded as Buckeye State Radon — 100% focused on radon testing and mitigation.

That gap drove him to specialize. He pursued his Ohio Department of Health radon licenses — earning both the Radon Measurement Specialist license (#RS579) and the Radon Contractor license (#RC362) — and built Buckeye State Radon around a straightforward commitment: give Ohio families honest answers, professional-grade testing, and guaranteed mitigation results.

Philosophy

Why Carl Does This Work

Radon is Ohio’s most widespread and least-discussed home health hazard. It sits in a frustrating category: serious enough to be the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, but invisible enough that most homeowners never think about it until something goes wrong — a diagnosis, a home sale, a concerned neighbor.

Carl’s approach to every job reflects this reality. He doesn’t just place a monitor and hand you a number. He explains what the number means in the context of your home, your family’s habits, and your specific foundation. He recommends mitigation when it’s warranted and tells you honestly when it isn’t. And when a system goes in, it’s designed for that home — not a one-size-fits-all install.

“The homeowners I worry about most aren’t the ones who called me with a high result — they’re the ones who haven’t tested yet, because they assume their home is fine. In Ohio, that assumption is wrong about one in three times.”

Service area

Deeply Familiar with Central & Southwest Ohio

Carl’s service area spans the Columbus metro east to west and south through Dayton to Cincinnati — a corridor that sits almost entirely on the glacially deposited limestone and shale formations that make Ohio one of the highest-radon states in the country. He’s tested homes in Franklin, Delaware, Licking, Montgomery, Greene, Hamilton, Warren, Butler, and Clermont counties, among others, and understands how local geology, water table, and construction style affect radon behavior in each area.

That local knowledge matters. Two homes on the same street can have dramatically different radon levels based on foundation differences, sub-slab material, and HVAC configuration. Carl brings the experience to understand why — and to design the right solution rather than the default one.

Verify Carl’s licenses. Carl’s Ohio Department of Health radon licenses are publicly verifiable through the ODH Radon Program — Radon Contractor #RC362 (mitigation) and Measurement Specialist #RS579 (testing). You can confirm active license status directly with the state at odh.ohio.gov.
