Ohio neighbors protecting Ohio families.
Buckeye State Radon is owned and operated by Carl Woolwine, a licensed Ohio radon professional. Across 30+ years inside Ohio homes — including years of licensed radon testing and mitigation —, we’ve seen firsthand how often radon is overlooked — until it shouldn’t be.
Ohio is classified as a Zone 1 state by the EPA — meaning radon levels are predicted to be at their highest. We’ve personally measured levels exceeding 20 pCi/L in homes that looked perfectly safe from the outside. Roughly 1 in 3 homes across our service area test above the EPA’s recommended action level of 4.0 pCi/L. We built this company around one commitment: honest answers and a guaranteed fix. Buckeye State Radon continues the radon practice of Air Duct Cleaning & Radon Co. — the company Carl founded in 1990.

What is radon and why is it dangerous?
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that rises from the decay of uranium in soil and rock. It’s colorless, odorless, and tasteless. When radon seeps into your home through cracks and openings in the foundation, it can accumulate to dangerous levels. The EPA and the Surgeon General identify radon as the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., responsible for about 21,000 deaths each year.
What is the EPA action level for radon?
The EPA recommends action to reduce radon at or above 4.0 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). However, even levels between 2.0 and 4.0 pCi/L carry some risk, and homeowners may want to consider mitigation. The average outdoor radon level is about 0.4 pCi/L — which illustrates just how concentrated indoor accumulation can become.
How common is high radon in Ohio?
Very common. Ohio is an EPA Zone 1 state, meaning radon levels are predicted to be at their highest. Across Central and Southwest Ohio — from Columbus through Dayton and Cincinnati — approximately 1 in 3 homes test above the EPA action level of 4.0 pCi/L. The underlying geology of limestone and shale makes our region especially prone.
How does radon testing work?
We place a continuous radon monitor (CRM) in the lowest livable level of your home for a minimum of 48 hours. The device takes hourly readings and provides a precise average. During testing, we ask that you maintain closed-building conditions. After the test, you receive a detailed report with your results, the full hourly data log, and clear recommendations — in plain English.
How does a radon mitigation system work?
The most effective method is Active Sub-Slab Depressurization (ASD). We drill a small hole through the basement floor, insert a PVC pipe, and connect it to a specialized radon fan. This creates negative pressure beneath the slab, drawing radon from the soil before it enters your home and venting it safely above the roofline. The system runs continuously and uses about as much electricity as a 75-watt light bulb.
How long does installation take?
Most residential mitigation systems are installed in 3–5 hours. More complex foundations, crawl spaces, or homes requiring multiple suction points may take a full day. We always schedule a post-mitigation test to verify performance before we consider the job done.
How much does radon testing and mitigation cost?
Radon testing typically costs $125–$175 for a standard 48-hour professional test. Mitigation system installation generally ranges from $800–$1,500 depending on foundation type, home size, and system complexity. We provide free estimates with all costs explained upfront — no surprises.
Do you serve the Cincinnati and Dayton areas?
Yes — we serve the entire Central and Southwest Ohio corridor, from Columbus and its suburbs through Springfield, Dayton, and all the way to Cincinnati and surrounding communities. If you’re unsure whether you’re in our service area, just give us a call.
